    Funding boost for Festivals

    Dundee Blues Bonanza will benefit from new tourism funding it was announced yesterday.

    They are among five local tourist attractions awarded a share of more than £30,000 from the Innovation and Development Fund, which is jointly funded by Destination Dundee and Angus and Dundee Tourism Partnership.

    The Dundee Blues Bonanza was one of two city festivals given funding - the other being NEoN 2010 digital arts event.

    Thousands flock to the McManus

    Public response to the revamped McManus Galleries shows its £12 million refurbishment project had been a resounding success, Dundee councillors heard last night, writes Brian Allison, local government reporter.

    The McManus re-opened just over a week ago after having been closed for around four years while a major upgrade was carried out.

    Councillor Bob Duncan, convener of leisure, arts and communities, said it is back "bigger and better."

    UNIVERSITY HELPS PUPILS GET A TASTE OF RESEARCH WORK

    Two senior pupils from Bell Baxter High School in Cupar have completed their Advanced Higher Physics projects under the guidance of top academics at the University of Dundee.

    S6 pupils Eilidh Johnston and Ceri Griffiths (both 17) have been thrown in at the deep end by completing research projects initiated by lecturer Dr Paul Campbell.  The pair will now carry out a couple of follow-up experiments and write their reports on their individual projects.

    RSE HONOUR FOR DUNDEE ACADEMICS

    The election of new Fellows to the Royal Society of Edinburgh has seen three scientists and one artist from the University of Dundee recognised by the esteemed organisation.

    The latest Fellows to be elected from the University are: Professor Geoffrey Codd, Professor of Microbiology; Professor Will Maclean MBE, Emeritus Professor of Visual Art; Professor Allan Struthers, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine; Professor Daan van Aalten, Professor of Biological Chemistry.

    RUN FOR HEALTH, RUN FOR RESEARCH - THE MONIKIE 10K RACE FOR DIABETES RESEARCH

    The University of Dundee's third annual Monikie 10K Race for Diabetes Research will once again offer hundreds of runners the chance to help fight one of the world's fastest growing health problems.

    The University's Diabetes Research Campaign is close to raising the £3million required to create state of the art research and patient care facilities across Angus, Dundee and Perth & Kinross, adding to the world-class diabetes research programmes which are already well-established through the University and NHS Tayside.
