Dundee Afternoon Lecture
Six local societies - The Royal Scottish Geographical Society Dundee Centre, The Friends of Dundee City Archives, Dundee Naturalists' Society, The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, The Friends of the University of Dundee Botanic Gardens and Abertay Historical Society have organised a fascinating series of talks, all are open to members of the public. The Programme is as follows:- Wednesday 8th November The Tay Bridge Disaster by Martin Allan Dundee City Council Archivist Martin Allan will present an overview of events leading up to the fateful Tay Rail Bridge disaster of 1879 and the possible causes. Wednesday 13th December The Woods, Wildflowers and Old Railway Stations of Easter Ross by Brian Ballinger Explore the woods and wild places of Easter Ross. Brian Ballinger is the county botanical recorder and has spent many years studying the varied plant life of this highland region. Wednesday 10th January Wildcats in Scotland and the Angus Glens by Dr Ruaridh Campbell A look at the status of wildcats in Scotland and the research being done in one of their strongholds - The Angus Glens. With the problems of interbreeding with domestic cats can these enigmatic animals be saved from extinction? Wednesday 14th February Activists in Long Dresses by Ajay Close A bomb at Rabbie Burns cottage, arson attacks, and a hatchet in the Kings portrait in Edinburgh. For these activities four Scottish suffragettes were jailed then went on hunger strike to be ultimately force fed. Extraordinary inspirational women. Wednesday 7th March Understanding Scotland's Storminess by Professor Alastair Lawson One of the controversial areas in the current climate change debate is whether Scotland's future climate is likely to be characterized by increased winter storminess. Alastair will discuss this question by using records of Scotland weather and climate to interpret long-term patterns that, can be used to predict future changes.
