Firestarter
DUNDEAD 2017 Based on one of King’s least-known works, Firestarter deals with a government conspiracy to create a generation of telepaths by altering people’s consciousness through an experimental drug. When two victims of the drug trials have a child, (played by a nine-year-old Drew Barrymore), they find that she is born with the power to start fires with her mind and see into the near future. Soon, a government network known as the Shop comes after her and she must go on the run. Since its release in 1984, Mark L. Lester’s film has become something of a cult movie, and rightly so. How many films show you a nine-year-old repeatedly committing unspeakable acts of violence against government stooges? Add to that a genuinely nasty performance by the great George C. Scott, and a score by Tangerine Dream, and you have a very strange – but enjoyable – addition to the King canon.
