This year Christmas Light Nights celebration is bigger and brighter than ever, expanding over a whole weekend of exciting events and activities.

FRIDAY 24 NOVEMBER

 

Torchlight Procession 

This twinkling procession celebrates with glowing lanterns made by locals and community groups, live flame torches and music and drumming from Town Waits and the Boys Brigade Pipe band. Our annual torchlight procession, made by and for the people of Dundee, will parade from the McManus Galleries, along Commercial Street and into City Square.

You can collect your wristbands for participating in the procession at the Visitor Information Center in City Square or the reception at Dundee House, North Lindsay Sreet.

  • 5.30pm - Live flame torch registration from, High School of Dundee
  • 6.00pm - Lanterns gather, High School of Dundee 
  • 6:30pm - Procession leaves Dundee High School Commercial Street City Square

 

Christmas Lights Switch on

The lights on the Christmas tree and around the city centre will be switched on by Santa and the Lord Provost. We recommend lining the streets to watch the procession as it winds its way into the square from The McManus down Commercial Street and the High street. Or why not enjoy watching the countdown on the big screen from the comfort of Slessor Gardens with a mug of mulled wine and some tasty street food.

Big Winter Warm Up

This group aerobics workout is just what you need to warm up and ensure you enjoy the festivities. Led by fitness instructors from Leisure and Culture Dundee bring your enthusiasm and jump for joy to create some fun and laughter before the fireworks.

Got Soul Choir

Scotland’s premier soul choir celebrate the festive season with raucous uplifting harmonies that guarantee to get you tapping your feet! The joyous choir love to cover songs by everyone from Aretha Franklin to Lauryn Hill and Chic, and have performed sold-out concerts in the past at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall, Dundee’s Caird Hall Complex and Glasgow’s QMU.

Silent Movie Night – Peter Pan 

Enjoy a unique opportunity to see the classic 1924 black and white silent film Peter Pan, presented by The Friends of the Caird Hall Organ. For this very special event, Donald MacKenzie of The Odeon Leicester Square, London will provide the improvised organ accompaniment on the Caird Hall Organ.

Maggie's Penguin Parade Preview

Come and say hello to the Maggie’s Centre penguins before they get ready to hit the streets of Dundee, Angus and Perth during summer 2018 for a public art trail.

Wishing Wall

Wishing Wall will bring magic and sparkle to downtown Dundee. You are invited to make a wish for the future, put it on a label and we will set it on the wall to light up the night and shine bright for the evening.

Colourful projections on Caird Hall

Seasonal celebratory images will light up the night and illuminate the back of the Caird Hall and Boots Corner.

Phyzog III

The Phyzog installation by artist Gary Gowans shows themes of light, peace, empathy, tolerance and goodwill. Utilising visual techniques found in anamorphic art, the work is a metre-high polished steel column which acts as a reflector. When animations are projected strategically round the reflector, the designs and reversed typography become clear to the viewer.

St Pauls Cathedral

The beautiful cathedral on the High Street will raises the curtain on an evening of traditional celebration to get you in the mood for Christmas with a programme of choirs and music.

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. A miserable old moaner wants nothing to do with Christmas but is persuaded to take part in a Nativity play. Some audience volunteers young and old can dress in simple costumes and play shepherds, sheep or angels. Will we succeed in persuading the miseryguts to celebrate what Christmas is all about?

Celebratory Fireworks

To celebrate the start of the Christmas festivities, fireworks will burst into the night skies, choreographed to music. Set off in the city centre area, crowds will get a good view in and around the City Square or down at the waterfront on Slessor Gardens’ big screen.

Pop Up Dundee Christmas Market

A Winter market is always a great way to spark some Christmas spirit. This outdoor market will be selling a variety of delicious street food and drink so wrap up warm and enjoy a hot drink and snacks as you explore the stalls for Christmas gift ideas.

  • 4pm–9pm (bar open until 10pm): Slessor Gardens

 

The Big Screen

Based in Slessor Gardens, this outdoor Big Screen will be live streaming the Christmas lights switch on, as well as the fireworks and key event information.

 

Pingoo the Penguin

Meet Pingoo the loveable penguin, a cute Christmassy welcome to the Christmas Market at Slessor Gardens.

 

Hornes Carnival

 Stretching the length of the Murraygate to the Wellgate, look out for a variety of carnival rides for all ages to enjoy.

Street Theatre

Would you like a selfie with an Elfie? Or to cheer with a Reindeer? Join the performing arts students and graduates from Dundee and Angus College for a night of interactive festive fun!

 Christmas Market 

TheChristmas Market at Slessor Gardens continues through to 6pm on Saturday – head down to pick up some lunch or have a wander to find some unique Christmas gifts to go under the tree.

Ice Sculpture

Watch a stunning performance of live ice carving on Saturday afternoon with the sensational Sandinyoureye team, using chainsaws and chisels. Catch it before it melts!

Playgrid

Join the award winning team from Pitlochry’s Enchanted Forest to create a stunning piece of interactive fun. Built by the public and visitors through the day, it transforms into an immersive installation after dark.

Sound of Dundee Stage

Celebrating new, independent music from some of the best musicians and bands that Dundee has to offer, these free concerts are brought to you by the Dundee Place Partnership team. Performances will take place in the market in the afternoon.

Cheer on the decorated electric cars as they make their way through Lochee and into the city centre, than get the low down from car owners and see their Christmas designs all parked up in the High School of Dundee.

Drawn to Light

On Saturday 25th November a spectacular video installation will illuminate the exterior of The McManus Galleries, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Musuem. ‘Drawn to Light’ brings together visual artist Duncan Marquiss and musician Jonnie Common. Marquiss’ has been invited to delve into the City’s collection of objects and artworks to create a new large-scale video installation that will light up the whole exterior of the Museum building.

He will be joined by on the museum steps by Jonnie Common for a live performance of a new musical piece inspired by the spaces, sounds and stories of The McManus.
