The Life and Adventures of Sir Ernest Shackleton

Dundee Heritage Trust has put on display a selection of objects from its collections to illustrate the life and adventures of Sir Ernest Shackleton.

Ernest Shackleton (1874 - 1922) is one of the greats of Antarctic exploration; indeed many consider him to be the pre-eminent Antarctic explorer. Through a selection of objects from the Trust’s collections explore his life and Antarctic expeditions including the 1901 -1904 Discovery Expedition and the 1914-1917 Endurance Expedition. Highlights on display include a bottle of Discovery port wine, a rare 1901 Discovery officers photograph, a piece of false keel taken from the Endurance and a Vanity Fair caricature of Shackleton. In his expedition diaries Shackleton often comments on the Antarctic wildlife he saw, so to highlight this we have on loan a selection of specimens from Dundee University’s D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum including a full sized Gentoo penguin skeleton.

The objects are in the Discovery Point foyer showcase from 27th July until 5th January 2012.
