Race to the Pole Exhibition

A special exhibition of photographs and objects from Dundee Heritage Trust’s collections commemorating Captain Scott’s fateful British Antarctic Expedition of 1910-12 aboard the Terra Nova. The exhibition dates will coincide with the centenary of Scott reaching the South Pole in January 2012 and the death of the Polar party in March on the return journey.

The show will feature stunning images of the Terra Nova, sledging parties, penguins and seals, vast icebergs, life in the hut at Cape Evans and portraits of the men including highly emotional photographs of the Polar party at the South Pole. Many are incredibly well-known iconic images by Herbert Ponting, the most famous of all Antarctic photographers. Some of the most famous images are on display but there are also some less-well known views that reflect daily life on the expedition.

There are also showcases of archives and objects from the Trust’s collections including the remains of a cake sent to Captain Oates, wood from the Terra Nova’s Wardroom, a pony snow shoe and poignant souvenirs relating to the death of Scott and his four companions.

The exhibition will also highlight the local and Scottish links in that the Terra Nova was a Dundee-built whaling ship and that some of the planning for the expedition took place at Glen Prosen in Angus.
