Dundee's biggest ever celebration of comics set to take over city this summer

Whilst Dundee has long been known as the city of Discovery, this summer it’s set to celebrate its status as the undisputed home of comics with the Dundee Summer (Bash) Streets Festival, which will take place from 14th-24th of July.

For the duration of the festival, Dundee will become ‘Beanotown’ as the much-loved characters and stories will take over the streets of the city for an extravaganza of stories. The programme is supported as part of Scotland's Year of Stories 2022, a year-long celebration ehich will spotligt. celebrate, and promote the wealth of stories inspired by, writen or created in Scotland.

Designed to appeal to locals and visitors alike, the packed programme features events, talks, exhibitions, screenings, trails, workshops, and performances across the city centre.

The Dennis and Gnash Dash family fun run will invite participants to dress in red and black in homage to our ‘favourite menace’ and a ‘pop up’ history of comics will tell the rich story of Dundee’s comic creating past and present.

A Blamazing Beanotown Trail Map, specially designed by Beano, will guide festivalgoers around key Dundee places associated with the famous comic characters, and an exhibition inside DC Thomson’s HQ will give visitors a rare chance to see original artwork from one of the world’s most recognisable comics.

Free outdoor performances will take over City Square across both weekends, and a character parade will see participants dress up in their favourite comic book costumes.

In addition to the family-friendly activities on offer, there will be a host of workshops and talks for those interested in behind the scenes of comics. The Comicopolis talk will see Professor Christopher Murray delve into Dundee’s comic heritage and history, whilst LACD libraries will host how to draw comics sessions for 8–14-year-olds. A professional development panel is planned with Creative Scotland and others advising on the business of creating comics, and the UNESCO City of Design Dundee team will host a representation in comics event.

Meanwhile festival partners across the city will be adding to the programme with their own family friendly activities in The McManus and V&A Dundee, and a fun zine event in DCA.

Culture Minister Neil Gray said: “Dundee has a well-deserved reputation for producing comics that have enriched the childhoods of generations of people around the world.

Characters from the stories and their mischievous antics have also inspired many writers and illustrators over the years.

The festival is a welcome addition to our Year of Stories and I looking forward to finding out more about the history of these entertaining comics.”

Glaswegian fashion designer, illustrator, stylist and radical creative Charles Jeffrey will co-curate V&A Dundee’s next Tay Late on Friday 27th May, an after-hours event celebrating the museum’s current exhibition on the ground-breaking dancer and choreographer Michael Clark.

Tay Late: Because We Must will fill V&A Dundee with music, films, performance, conversations and more from 7:30pm to midnight on Friday 27th May. Tickets are on sale now at the V&A Dundee.

The after-hours, one-night-only event will showcase and celebrate the work of emerging and contemporary designers, musicians and performers who, like Michael Clark, work with a sense of urgency and rebellious energy. The full line-up of performers will be revealed in the coming weeks.

Charles Jeffrey runs an internationally renowned fashion label and a cult club night, both founded in 2014. The LOVERBOY night forms the primary research for Jeffrey’s fashion collections, with his tribe of friends and creative collaborators – artists, performers, musicians, drag queens and poets – contributing to the egalitarian spirit of the brand. Charles will bring that same energy to V&A Dundee.

Tay Late: Because We Must will bring to life the excitement of V&A Dundee’s current exhibition Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer, exploring the next generation of multidisciplinary creators who share Clark’s pioneering and radical approach to bringing together dance, art, design, fashion, music and more.

The exhibition Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer was curated and organised by Barbican, London. The exhibition runs until 4 September 2022 and will also be open throughout the Tay Late evening.

Charles Jeffrey said: “I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to respond to Michael’s work for this event. I feel so connected to his work and all the people that have orbited it. It’s so exciting to be able to do this in Scotland, our shared home country.”

Nichol Keene, Creative Programmer at V&A Dundee, said: “There is no one better than Charles Jeffrey to co-curate Tay Late: Because We Must and to celebrate Michael Clark.

"Jeffrey is a radical creative who thrives in the colourful tension between control and chaos. His LOVERBOY cult club night and fashion label are rooted in collaboration and built on experimentation and playing with performance. The brand champions diversity, self-identity, and relentless support of the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Together, we are assembling a line-up of contemporary designers, DJs, artists, dancers, and diving into the LOVERBOY archive to fill V&A Dundee with the rebellious energy and sense of urgency embodied by ground-breaking Scottish dancer and choreographer Michael Clark.

“Expect music, films, performance, conversations and more at this after-hours, one-night-only event.”

Charles Jeffrey is from Glasgow and studied at Central Saint Martins in London. Jeffrey is the winner of two Scottish Fashion Awards, the first in 2016 as Graduate of the Year and later as Young Designer of the Year in 2017. The LOVERBOY label has since been a finalist in the 2018 edition of the LVMH Prize and was nominated for the BFC/Vogue Fashion Fund in 2019. In 2018, Jeffrey won the British GQ Award for Emerging Designer. In 2017, he received the British Fashion Award for Best Emerging Menswear Designer.

The exhibition Michael Clark: Cosmic Dancer runs until 4th September 2022. This unprecedented and immersive exhibition of the Scottish dancer and choreographer’s work establishes Clark’s radical presence in British cultural history and explores his inimitable combination of classical and contemporary influences such as ballet and punk.

The exhibition delves deep into Clark’s legendary creative collaborations with artists, designers, musicians and performers, giving an extraordinary insight into one of Scotland’s most remarkable creative minds.

The Tay Late evening is named after Because We Must (1987), an iconic Michael Clark stage production that was developed into a film with Charles Atlas.

VisitScotland, ScotRail and Beano launch jointly family campaign

Famous comic strip characters Dennis & Gnasher and Minnie the Minx are the faces of a new ‘blamazing’* tourism marketing campaign to reignite families’ love of rail adventures in Scotland.

VisitScotland and ScotRail have teamed up with Beano for the first time to promote family holidays and day trips across the country.

The two-year campaign aims to use the cross-generational appeal of one of the UK’s best-loved comics and ScotRail’s Kids for a Quid deal, to promote sustainable travel as part of Scottish tourism’s recovery.

A special landing page - www.visitscotland.com/beano - has been created with Dennis, Gnasher and Minnie highlighting places to visit in each of Scotland’s seven cities (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth, Stirling), including dog-friendly days out.

Research** on the family market by national tourism organisation, VisitScotland, found that affordability, easy transport access and nostalgia are important decision-making triggers for parents considering a UK holiday destination. Of those surveyed, children had a “big influence” on the destination for one in five families.

The campaign will target UK families through digital and print marketing to promote attractions across Scotland.

It forms part of VisitScotland’s drive for sustainable tourism in line with the national tourism strategy, Scotland Outlook 2030.

The UK family market accounts for a third of all overnight and day trips in Scotland. Prior to the pandemic, overnight stays by families saw year-on-year growth since 2016, with an average 13% increase in trips on the previous year. UK families took 2.2 million overnight family holidays in Scotland in 2019 – an increase of 15% on 2018 and the highest in ten years.

Research*** also shows that families contribute the biggest share of the tourism day trip economy in Scotland. On average, UK families take around 41.1 million day trips a year in the country, generating £2.1 billion a year.

Beano is the world’s longest-running children’s comic with an average monthly readership of 450K for children aged 6-12. It also has one of the fastest-growing kids’ digital networks in the UK, centred around the award-winning beano.com reaching 5 million children each month.

ScotRail Kids for a Quid tickets means up to four children (aged 5-15) can travel for just £1 return on off-peak and weekend journeys with every paying adult. Additionally, it also gives one free child entry to some of Scotland’s most popular attractions when purchasing a full price adult ticket at the attraction.

Vicki Miller, Director of Marketing and Digital at VisitScotland, said: “The UK family market makes up around a third of Scottish tourism trips and therefore it’s important we create fun and engaging content for parents and children as part of our tourism recovery plans.

“By working with ScotRail and Beano we aim to raise awareness of what makes Scotland a fantastic family destination and the benefits of exploring our ‘blamazing’ sights by rail. It is particularly appropriate that we should team up with one of the UK’s best-loved children’s comics during Scotland’s Year of Stories.

“The campaign will provide a creative way to further support the recovery of the tourism industry while promoting sustainable travel experiences to the benefit of visitors, communities and our environment.”

Lesley Kane, ScotRail Commercial Director, said: “This is a fantastic partnership with Beano and we are delighted to be able to play our part in helping families enjoy Scotland by train.

“Children love the train, and our Kids for a Quid offer provides real value for money. With more than 2,000 trains running every day across the country, there is no better way to give the kids an exciting day out and create new memories for your family.

“We are looking forward to welcoming more and more people back to our services to experience all that Scotland has to offer, by rail.”

Mike Stirling, Beano’s Director of Mischief, commented: For me, Beano has always represented the heart of Scotland's storytelling. As a kid, it was visiting new places by rail that sparked my own sense of imagination. I'd be engrossed in my comic as we left the station before glimpses of new places distracted me. On one trip, crossing the Tay Rail Bridge, a fellow passenger proudly informed me my Beano was created in my destination, Dundee. I was blown away something so cool was so close!

“The same goes for all of Scotland's seven cities. Every visit, you come away with a new story to share. Our characters are ordinary kids exploring extraordinary imaginations and I hope Minnie, Dennis and Gnasher encourage many families, pets included, to get on board and create their own memorable stories during this special year.”

A new local gift card to help boost tourism and support efforts to keep spending local is set for launch in Dundee.

The new Dundee Gift Card is part of a Scottish Government led initiative to give every region of Scotland its own Scotland Loves Local Gift Card, driven by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, alongside Perth based fintech Miconex

Leisure & Culture Dundee venues including Broughty Castle, Mills Observatory, Dundee Ice Arena, Camperdown Wildlife Centre and The McManus Art Gallery & Museum will accept the new Dundee Gift Card, alongside, alongside V&A Dundee, Scotland’s design museum.

The card will also be accepted at retail, hospitality, health and beauty, services and accommodation providers in the city, with more than 60 businesses signed up to date. Each gift card is a prepaid Mastercard, with the balance automatically deducted from the card.

Moira Methven, Chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee said: “We’re pleased to be able to showcase our venues through the Dundee Gift Card. The gift card has the power to drive significant spending across Dundee, both by providing local people with an easy way to give the gift of Dundee, and by encouraging additional visits and spend from tourists.”

Paul Campbell, Engagement Officer at The McManus, which picked up the Best Visitor Attraction award at the 2020 Scottish Thistle Awards said: “The pandemic has been a difficult time for all visitor attractions, but we are thrilled to be welcoming visitors back to our art gallery and museum. With a Dundee Gift Card in their pocket, people can shop, but also go to a museum, visit Camperdown Wildlife Centre or go ice skating, it’s a way to experience all that Dundee has to offer.”

Mark Flynn convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Dundee has so much to offer visitors in terms of culture, heritage and retail and the Dundee Gift Card will make it easier for people to enjoy the best of the city.”

STP Chief Officer Phil Prentice said: “It’s fantastic to see Leisure & Culture Dundee and Dundee City Council showing their support for the Dundee Gift Card. Their backing – and that of a growing number of other organisations – will help build a stronger future, providing another way in which people can support local businesses.

“The greater the variety and number of businesses that are part of the gift card, the more appealing it will be for a wide range of customers, and for a wide range of uses – from birthdays, occasions such as Mother’s Day and Christmas, and for corporate rewards. We have never valued local life, the people and businesses around us more. The Scotland Loves Local Gift Card embraces that.”

Card operator Miconex supports more than 130 gift card programmes across the UK, Ireland and North America. Miconex Managing Director Colin Munro said:

“There are over 70,000 households in Dundee, if each household bought or were given a £50 Dundee Gift Card, that would be over £3.5 million locked into Dundee for the benefit of local businesses of all types, including those that have suffered significantly during the pandemic, like arts, culture, leisure, retail and hospitality. There is huge potential for the Dundee Gift Card to support local people, jobs and businesses at this vital stage in the recovery process.”

The next phase of the development of Eden Project Dundee has been confirmed.

Ambitious plans to create a global attraction in the heart of Dundee have taken another step forward with agreement to complete detailed development design and formal planning.

The Eden Project and its partners have agreed a funding package that will pay for the next stages of work on the world-class attraction.

The £7.6m injection into the project will fund detailed design and development and completing the work required for a planning application. This is effectively everything needed to get the project ready for construction.

This work follows the completion of the Eden Project Dundee pollination study and masterplan, which established the economic, social and environmental case for the project and started exploring design and content. A series of community programmes in Dundee, beginning with the planting of wildflower meadows, is already underway.

Eden Project Dundee partners Dundee City Council, The Northwood Charitable Trust and the University of Dundee will all contribute to the funding pot. The Eden Project will also invest heavily into the project through its development arm, Eden Project International, in order to maximise the Dundee project’s chances of success.

Eden Project Dundee, which is set to be built on the former gasworks on East Dock Street overlooking the River Tay, is projected to attract more than 500,000 visitors every year, generating £27m of economic impact on the region annually. The project will create 200 direct jobs and support an additional 300 jobs in the supply chain and connected businesses. The construction phase is projected to bring an additional £171m to the regional economy.

The Eden Project team is responsible for the hugely successful Eden Project in Cornwall which has turned an investment of £141m into a £2.2bn economic impact on the regional economy in South West England. Since opening in 2001, Eden in Cornwall has welcomed more than 22m visitors and in recent years has continued to see annual visitor numbers of more than a million.

David Harland, Chief Executive of Eden Project International, said: “This is a hugely significant moment for Eden Project Dundee. Not only does it fund work on the project up to the point of shovels going into the ground but also demonstrates the huge confidence the city of Dundee and its institutions have shown for our vision.

“With last year’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland established its place as a global environmental leader and we hope to continue this momentum in Dundee.

“Everyone at Eden is energised by this project and inspired by the enviable ambition of the city. The gasworks site is unique and brimming with opportunities for an attraction that Dundonians can feel proud to call their own. We can’t wait to share our ideas with everyone as the plans develop and mature.”

Dundee City Council leader, Councillor John Alexander, said: “The feasibility work that has been undertaken shows just how much Eden can deliver for Dundee – hundreds of jobs, huge visitor numbers and tens of millions of pounds into the local economy.

“And it’s so much more than that too, with tremendous opportunities for education and connecting our diverse communities.

“Eden Project Dundee truly is an incredible concept, which will wow city residents and tourists alike. It will be another jewel in the crown of our stunning, transformed Waterfront area.

“This investment by the city council and its partners is a real statement of intent and shows our collective commitment to progressing this world-class project.”

Professor Iain Gillespie, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee, said: “The Eden Project provides the opportunity for us to develop our city as a beacon for social and environmental sustainability, bringing the benefits of a just transition for our citizens to a society more in tune with our local and global environment. Dundee can again provide leadership for others in Scotland and beyond.

“As a university with social purpose at its heart and being an institution that is ranked top among UK universities for Climate Action, we are delighted to support this incredibly exciting development that will bring real benefits to our students as well as the wider community.”

Blair Thomson, Director of The Northwood Charitable Trust, said: "We are delighted that Eden Project Dundee is making such rapid progress and we are excited about what the next stage of development will bring.

"This is a project that will be transformative for Dundee, acting as a beacon for social, environmental and economic regeneration. Eden Project Dundee will be a unique attraction for the city and be a standard-bearer for Scotland in the growing global family of Eden Projects."

Eden Project Dundee will draw on the history of the city’s Nine Incorporated Trades and is themed around nine new “Guilds” for the 21st century – Healers, Growers, Navigators, Myth-Makers, Noticers, Alchemists, Celebrators, Menders and “Re-Sourcerors”.

It is characterised not by specialisms, like the existing nine trades, but by providing alternative ways of perceiving the world. Each Guild will have its Guild Hall on the main Eden Project Dundee site with opportunities for “embassies” elsewhere in the city.

These Guild Halls will form the central experience spaces for Eden Project Dundee visitors and will include areas such as the Lookout, which celebrates connections between people and the natural world, the Lush Bunker, a high-tech zone showcasing new ways to grow plants and featuring hyper-real journeys into the air, soil and water, and the Seam, a collection of emotional, story-driven experiences related to mining and its alternatives.

The preferred site for Eden Project Dundee on East Dock Street has good public transport links, the potential for a new pedestrian connection to the city centre and is less than a mile away from V&A Dundee and the train station.

The existing tall brick walls on the site suggested to the Eden team the potential to create walled gardens, making for a striking contrast to the industrial heritage of the gasworks. Eden envisages this as a powerful symbol of regeneration, echoing the project’s home in Cornwall which is located in a former clay quarry.Building Eden Project Dundee in this location would also provide an eastern anchor for the Dundee Waterfront regeneration project.

Dundee’s revamped Christmas offering was visited by over 267,500 people and generated £2.6m for the city’s economy, it was revealed today.

Christmas in Dundee 2021 featured the Winterfest event in Slessor Gardens, which included a festive market, skating rink and a big wheel, as well as a winter wonderland in City Square and new Christmas lights in the streets.

An evaluation of the Christmas activity has now been completed – and it revealed the event was hugely popular with visitors.

Plans are now being put in place to ensure Dundee city centre is once again the place to be, for locals and visitors alike, during the 2022 Christmas period.

Councillor Mark Flynn, convener of city development, said: “We promised we'd build a bigger and better celebration for Christmas 2021 and that’s what we’ve achieved.

“There was a real buzz about the town, with activities for young and old alike, and that’s now being borne out in the evaluation.

“The surveys that were done with hundreds of visitors showed that 90% rated the event as good or very good, while 88% had a more positive impression of Dundee due to the activities.

“The visitor numbers between City Square and Slessor Gardens are fantastic, and the direct economic impact of £2.6million shows that our ambitious plans for Christmas have really made their mark on the city.

“By whatever measure you look at – the enjoyment of those who attended or the economic impacts of the event – it’s been a huge success.”

A team of evaluators conducted site surveys to measure social and economic impact and to monitor the audience demographics and event experience.

The survey found that over two-thirds said attending had a very positive impact on their health and wellbeing. A further 68% said that the event helped with "quality time with my family.”

Economic impact findings included: just under three in 10 people who attended were visitors to the city; and 84 temporary jobs were created.

Councillor John Alexander, leader of the city council, said: “I want the kind of superb Christmas offering that Dundee had in 2021 to be a permanent fixture, and we are already planning for this year.

“That doesn’t mean it has to be exactly the same – we want to learn from 2021 so that we can build and improve.

“We also want to harness the positivity and get others on board, particularly businesses who might want to get involved and help us to offer something even bigger and better next year.”

Christmas In Dundee 2021 was funded by Dundee City Council, with support from Event Scotland.

Paul Bush OBE, VisitScotland’s director of events, said: “We were delighted to support Christmas in Dundee 2021 through Scotland’s Events Recovery Fund, established by EventScotland in conjunction with funding from the Scottish Government.

“Scotland is the perfect stage for events and it is wonderful to see the positive impact the Christmas activity had on visitors and the community as a whole. It reinforces the important role events play both to our communities and the country as a whole.”

A spokesperson for M&N Events, organisers of Winterfest, said: “We are overjoyed at the positive impact WinterFest created for visitors and for the city of Dundee, and glad that our investment in the event was able to contribute to a more festive feel in the city.

“We are delighted that so many people were able to enjoy a Christmas event of this scale where they were able to have fun and feel safe. We are very excited to be able to bring a bigger and better WinterFest to Dundee for 2022 and are already working on ways we can deliver this.”

As for food, there's exciting Scottish cuisine by Masterchef winner Jamie Scott at waterfront restaurant The Newport, where you can see beautiful sunsets over the River Tay from its windows (and stay the night in one of its four bedrooms). For a longer stay, try the recently-opened Staybridge Suites, in a cleverly-converted former jute mill.
