Cine Sunday: Avatar: The Way of Water
Oscar-winning director James Cameron returns with a spectacular sequel to the 2009 sci-fi epic Avatar. For Avatar: The Way of Water, he combines his interests in underwater exploration, championing environmental protections, and imaginative technical film production into another mega blockbuster! As is often the case for sequels, Avatar: The Way of Water seeks to expand its story by introducing a new dynasty of characters. Jake and Neytiri's children play critical roles in the defence of the distant moon Pandora. Digital face capture technology also allows the return of some fantastically hiss-able villains, including Stephen Lang's Colonel Quaritch and a slimeball company man played by Giovanni Ribisi. The real star of the show though, is the visual landscape that has been bought to life in digital masterstrokes. This return to Pandora is set in the seas and coastlines, a thus far unexplored area for the story. Just as it was possible to be entranced by the flora and fauna of the first film, the underwater world is beautifully imagined. The corals, rays and whale-like creatures will leave you marvelling at the screen. Information published by Leisure and Culture Dundee.
