Two new direct services from Shetland have taken off from 9th May, connecting Shetlanders with the cities of London and Dundee, operated by Scotland’s airline, Loganair.

The fastest way to travel to London from Shetland, the new three and a half hour service operates twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays – allowing for short breaks or longer stays in the bustling city of London. The new service lands in London City Airport, the easiest and most accessible way to travel to the city, just six miles from central London and three miles from Canary Wharf.

Providing further connectivity to and from Shetland, the airline has additionally launched a direct service to Dundee, operating twice weekly on Mondays and Thursdays on the same aircraft. In addition to connecting family and friends in and around Dundee, the service will connect travellers with the top tourist sites such as the V&A Museum, while allowing students and avid golfers access to nearby St Andrews – notably ahead of the 150th Open taking place this summer. Shetland and Dundee also have construction industry ties, and it is expected the service is set to benefit local businesses.

Loganair has been working closely with Promote Shetland on the launch of the routes and are planning further collaborative activity to showcase Shetland’s increased connectivity and leisure offering. Likewise, the airline is working with Tay Country to promote Dundee and the surrounding region to showcase the leisure opportunities available to prospective visitors from Shetland.

To celebrate the launch, the passengers on the first service from London were treated to the usual Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer, served on every Loganair flight, in addition to a Shetland speciality – Puffin Poo.

Adam Civico, Content Marketing Manager at Promote Shetland, and Nickesh Patel, Brand Marketing Manager at London City Airport joined the first flight from London to mark the occasion.

Kay Ryan, chief commercial officer at Loganair, said: “This new direct service between London City Airport and Shetland allows for quick and easy access to two of the UK’s most popular destinations for the first time. Shetlanders will now be just a short trip from the bustling city of London for both business and leisure, while Londoners, and those travelling through London, have access to the tranquil setting of Shetland where they can take in the incredible wildlife and picturesque views on offer.

“Likewise, the new Dundee route brings connectivity to the east coast of Scotland, allowing travellers to explore all that the city has on offer but also allowing further access to nearby coastal towns such as St Andrews.

“It is great to be able to offer this enhanced choice and connectivity to/from Shetland which will be welcome news for many local businesses recovering from the pandemic”

Adam Civico, head of content marketing at Promote Shetland, said: “Today’s launch of a new route to Shetland is great news for both leisure and business travellers. Shetland’s dramatic scenery, unique wildlife and friendly welcome are now just a short flight away from both London and Dundee.

“We hope many people are enticed to find their own true north and visit the islands. Not only are the islands perfect for a getaway in a spectacular location, but they are also a hub of innovation and enterprise.”

Inglis Lyon, HIAL managing director said: “The launch of Loganair’s service between Dundee and Shetland is reflective of the positive domestic recovery the aviation sector is experiencing across both Scotland and the UK.

“The new route will provide greater connectivity between the two locations and also allow passengers to link to London City. This is a welcome addition that will allow greater accessibility between national cities and remote areas of Scotland.”

Both routes to Dundee and London City qualify under the Air Discount Scheme (ADS).

Reservations for Loganair’s newly launched services to London City and Dundee from Shetland can be made at www.loganair.co.uk, by calling Loganair’s Customer Contact Centre on 0344 800 2855 or via travel agents and travel management companies using all major global distribution systems. Flights are inclusive of a 15kg checked baggage allowance.

VisitScotland, ScotRail and Beano launch jointly family campaign

Famous comic strip characters Dennis & Gnasher and Minnie the Minx are the faces of a new ‘blamazing’* tourism marketing campaign to reignite families’ love of rail adventures in Scotland.

VisitScotland and ScotRail have teamed up with Beano for the first time to promote family holidays and day trips across the country.

The two-year campaign aims to use the cross-generational appeal of one of the UK’s best-loved comics and ScotRail’s Kids for a Quid deal, to promote sustainable travel as part of Scottish tourism’s recovery.

A special landing page - www.visitscotland.com/beano - has been created with Dennis, Gnasher and Minnie highlighting places to visit in each of Scotland’s seven cities (Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth, Stirling), including dog-friendly days out.

Research** on the family market by national tourism organisation, VisitScotland, found that affordability, easy transport access and nostalgia are important decision-making triggers for parents considering a UK holiday destination. Of those surveyed, children had a “big influence” on the destination for one in five families.

The campaign will target UK families through digital and print marketing to promote attractions across Scotland.

It forms part of VisitScotland’s drive for sustainable tourism in line with the national tourism strategy, Scotland Outlook 2030.

The UK family market accounts for a third of all overnight and day trips in Scotland. Prior to the pandemic, overnight stays by families saw year-on-year growth since 2016, with an average 13% increase in trips on the previous year. UK families took 2.2 million overnight family holidays in Scotland in 2019 – an increase of 15% on 2018 and the highest in ten years.

Research*** also shows that families contribute the biggest share of the tourism day trip economy in Scotland. On average, UK families take around 41.1 million day trips a year in the country, generating £2.1 billion a year.

Beano is the world’s longest-running children’s comic with an average monthly readership of 450K for children aged 6-12. It also has one of the fastest-growing kids’ digital networks in the UK, centred around the award-winning beano.com reaching 5 million children each month.

ScotRail Kids for a Quid tickets means up to four children (aged 5-15) can travel for just £1 return on off-peak and weekend journeys with every paying adult. Additionally, it also gives one free child entry to some of Scotland’s most popular attractions when purchasing a full price adult ticket at the attraction.

Vicki Miller, Director of Marketing and Digital at VisitScotland, said: “The UK family market makes up around a third of Scottish tourism trips and therefore it’s important we create fun and engaging content for parents and children as part of our tourism recovery plans.

“By working with ScotRail and Beano we aim to raise awareness of what makes Scotland a fantastic family destination and the benefits of exploring our ‘blamazing’ sights by rail. It is particularly appropriate that we should team up with one of the UK’s best-loved children’s comics during Scotland’s Year of Stories.

“The campaign will provide a creative way to further support the recovery of the tourism industry while promoting sustainable travel experiences to the benefit of visitors, communities and our environment.”

Lesley Kane, ScotRail Commercial Director, said: “This is a fantastic partnership with Beano and we are delighted to be able to play our part in helping families enjoy Scotland by train.

“Children love the train, and our Kids for a Quid offer provides real value for money. With more than 2,000 trains running every day across the country, there is no better way to give the kids an exciting day out and create new memories for your family.

“We are looking forward to welcoming more and more people back to our services to experience all that Scotland has to offer, by rail.”

Mike Stirling, Beano’s Director of Mischief, commented: For me, Beano has always represented the heart of Scotland's storytelling. As a kid, it was visiting new places by rail that sparked my own sense of imagination. I'd be engrossed in my comic as we left the station before glimpses of new places distracted me. On one trip, crossing the Tay Rail Bridge, a fellow passenger proudly informed me my Beano was created in my destination, Dundee. I was blown away something so cool was so close!

“The same goes for all of Scotland's seven cities. Every visit, you come away with a new story to share. Our characters are ordinary kids exploring extraordinary imaginations and I hope Minnie, Dennis and Gnasher encourage many families, pets included, to get on board and create their own memorable stories during this special year.”

*  ‘Blamazing, blamtastic, blam to the max!’ in Beano language mean ‘awesome, incredible, epic, and perfect’ https://www.beano.com/posts/the-blamtastic-dennis-dictionary

A new local gift card to help boost tourism and support efforts to keep spending local is set for launch in Dundee.

The new Dundee Gift Card is part of a Scottish Government led initiative to give every region of Scotland its own Scotland Loves Local Gift Card, driven by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, alongside Perth based fintech Miconex

Leisure & Culture Dundee venues including Broughty Castle, Mills Observatory, Dundee Ice Arena, Camperdown Wildlife Centre and The McManus Art Gallery & Museum will accept the new Dundee Gift Card, alongside, alongside V&A Dundee, Scotland’s design museum.

The card will also be accepted at retail, hospitality, health and beauty, services and accommodation providers in the city, with more than 60 businesses signed up to date. Each gift card is a prepaid Mastercard, with the balance automatically deducted from the card.

Moira Methven, Chair of Leisure & Culture Dundee said: “We’re pleased to be able to showcase our venues through the Dundee Gift Card. The gift card has the power to drive significant spending across Dundee, both by providing local people with an easy way to give the gift of Dundee, and by encouraging additional visits and spend from tourists.”

Paul Campbell, Engagement Officer at The McManus, which picked up the Best Visitor Attraction award at the 2020 Scottish Thistle Awards said: “The pandemic has been a difficult time for all visitor attractions, but we are thrilled to be welcoming visitors back to our art gallery and museum. With a Dundee Gift Card in their pocket, people can shop, but also go to a museum, visit Camperdown Wildlife Centre or go ice skating, it’s a way to experience all that Dundee has to offer.”

Mark Flynn convener of Dundee City Council’s city development committee said: “Dundee has so much to offer visitors in terms of culture, heritage and retail and the Dundee Gift Card will make it easier for people to enjoy the best of the city.”

STP Chief Officer Phil Prentice said: “It’s fantastic to see Leisure & Culture Dundee and Dundee City Council showing their support for the Dundee Gift Card. Their backing – and that of a growing number of other organisations – will help build a stronger future, providing another way in which people can support local businesses.

“The greater the variety and number of businesses that are part of the gift card, the more appealing it will be for a wide range of customers, and for a wide range of uses – from birthdays, occasions such as Mother’s Day and Christmas, and for corporate rewards. We have never valued local life, the people and businesses around us more. The Scotland Loves Local Gift Card embraces that.”

Card operator Miconex supports more than 130 gift card programmes across the UK, Ireland and North America. Miconex Managing Director Colin Munro said:

“There are over 70,000 households in Dundee, if each household bought or were given a £50 Dundee Gift Card, that would be over £3.5 million locked into Dundee for the benefit of local businesses of all types, including those that have suffered significantly during the pandemic, like arts, culture, leisure, retail and hospitality. There is huge potential for the Dundee Gift Card to support local people, jobs and businesses at this vital stage in the recovery process.”

The next phase of the development of Eden Project Dundee has been confirmed.

Ambitious plans to create a global attraction in the heart of Dundee have taken another step forward with agreement to complete detailed development design and formal planning.

The Eden Project and its partners have agreed a funding package that will pay for the next stages of work on the world-class attraction.

The £7.6m injection into the project will fund detailed design and development and completing the work required for a planning application. This is effectively everything needed to get the project ready for construction.

This work follows the completion of the Eden Project Dundee pollination study and masterplan, which established the economic, social and environmental case for the project and started exploring design and content. A series of community programmes in Dundee, beginning with the planting of wildflower meadows, is already underway.

Eden Project Dundee partners Dundee City Council, The Northwood Charitable Trust and the University of Dundee will all contribute to the funding pot. The Eden Project will also invest heavily into the project through its development arm, Eden Project International, in order to maximise the Dundee project’s chances of success.

Eden Project Dundee, which is set to be built on the former gasworks on East Dock Street overlooking the River Tay, is projected to attract more than 500,000 visitors every year, generating £27m of economic impact on the region annually. The project will create 200 direct jobs and support an additional 300 jobs in the supply chain and connected businesses. The construction phase is projected to bring an additional £171m to the regional economy.

The Eden Project team is responsible for the hugely successful Eden Project in Cornwall which has turned an investment of £141m into a £2.2bn economic impact on the regional economy in South West England. Since opening in 2001, Eden in Cornwall has welcomed more than 22m visitors and in recent years has continued to see annual visitor numbers of more than a million.

David Harland, Chief Executive of Eden Project International, said: “This is a hugely significant moment for Eden Project Dundee. Not only does it fund work on the project up to the point of shovels going into the ground but also demonstrates the huge confidence the city of Dundee and its institutions have shown for our vision.

“With last year’s COP26 climate conference in Glasgow, Scotland established its place as a global environmental leader and we hope to continue this momentum in Dundee.

“Everyone at Eden is energised by this project and inspired by the enviable ambition of the city. The gasworks site is unique and brimming with opportunities for an attraction that Dundonians can feel proud to call their own. We can’t wait to share our ideas with everyone as the plans develop and mature.”

Dundee City Council leader, Councillor John Alexander, said: “The feasibility work that has been undertaken shows just how much Eden can deliver for Dundee – hundreds of jobs, huge visitor numbers and tens of millions of pounds into the local economy.

“And it’s so much more than that too, with tremendous opportunities for education and connecting our diverse communities.

“Eden Project Dundee truly is an incredible concept, which will wow city residents and tourists alike. It will be another jewel in the crown of our stunning, transformed Waterfront area.

“This investment by the city council and its partners is a real statement of intent and shows our collective commitment to progressing this world-class project.”

Professor Iain Gillespie, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dundee, said: “The Eden Project provides the opportunity for us to develop our city as a beacon for social and environmental sustainability, bringing the benefits of a just transition for our citizens to a society more in tune with our local and global environment. Dundee can again provide leadership for others in Scotland and beyond.

“As a university with social purpose at its heart and being an institution that is ranked top among UK universities for Climate Action, we are delighted to support this incredibly exciting development that will bring real benefits to our students as well as the wider community.”

Blair Thomson, Director of The Northwood Charitable Trust, said: "We are delighted that Eden Project Dundee is making such rapid progress and we are excited about what the next stage of development will bring.

"This is a project that will be transformative for Dundee, acting as a beacon for social, environmental and economic regeneration. Eden Project Dundee will be a unique attraction for the city and be a standard-bearer for Scotland in the growing global family of Eden Projects."

Eden Project Dundee will draw on the history of the city’s Nine Incorporated Trades and is themed around nine new “Guilds” for the 21st century – Healers, Growers, Navigators, Myth-Makers, Noticers, Alchemists, Celebrators, Menders and “Re-Sourcerors”.

It is characterised not by specialisms, like the existing nine trades, but by providing alternative ways of perceiving the world. Each Guild will have its Guild Hall on the main Eden Project Dundee site with opportunities for “embassies” elsewhere in the city.

These Guild Halls will form the central experience spaces for Eden Project Dundee visitors and will include areas such as the Lookout, which celebrates connections between people and the natural world, the Lush Bunker, a high-tech zone showcasing new ways to grow plants and featuring hyper-real journeys into the air, soil and water, and the Seam, a collection of emotional, story-driven experiences related to mining and its alternatives.

The preferred site for Eden Project Dundee on East Dock Street has good public transport links, the potential for a new pedestrian connection to the city centre and is less than a mile away from V&A Dundee and the train station.

The existing tall brick walls on the site suggested to the Eden team the potential to create walled gardens, making for a striking contrast to the industrial heritage of the gasworks. Eden envisages this as a powerful symbol of regeneration, echoing the project’s home in Cornwall which is located in a former clay quarry.Building Eden Project Dundee in this location would also provide an eastern anchor for the Dundee Waterfront regeneration project.

Condé Nast Traveller - The Scottish renaissance city

The revival of Dundee, by Danny Wallace

Dundee’s ascendance as one of the UK’s must-visit cultural destinations continues unabated after the opening of the dramatic waterside V&AScotland’s first design museum.

As for food, there's exciting Scottish cuisine by Masterchef winner Jamie Scott at waterfront restaurant The Newport, where you can see beautiful sunsets over the River Tay from its windows (and stay the night in one of its four bedrooms). For a longer stay, try the recently-opened Staybridge Suites, in a cleverly-converted former jute mill. And explore the town on one of the 300 new e-bikes which were installed across the city from July 2021 – keep an eye out for the redevelopment of West Ward Works, a print factory that made DC Thomson’s Beano and Dandy annuals, that will eventually host live performances, festivals and exhibitions, and become a base for designers, artists and other creative workers and companies. By Giovanna Dunmall

A landmark site on Dundee’s £1billion waterfront has been officially opened.

Waterfront Place, which will include the city’s urban beach, an active travel hub, landscaping and interactive play area was given the official seal of approval by John Alexander, leader of Dundee City Council, at a ceremony on the site adjacent to V&A Dundee.

He said: “This is one of the prime spots on the whole of the waterfront and right from the planning stage it was important that it could be accessed and used by everyone.

“Anyone who comes along will see for themselves the quality of the work, which was in itself a key part of our desire to attract people here, not just from the city but across Scotland, so that they could truly experience the re-established connection between the city and the river.

“Work started in February 2020, and was obviously slightly delayed by the pandemic, but we wanted to officially open the site now, at the height of summer, despite finishing touches still going on in some places.”

Costing just over £6m, the work at Waterfront Place received £1m of funding from the Scottish Government's European Regional Development Fund programme through the Low Carbon Travel and Transport Challenge Fund delivered by Transport Scotland. The fund has a focus on supporting projects which enable everyday functional journeys to be taken by walking, cycling and public transport and to support an increased proportion on ultra-low emission vehicles on Scotland’s roads.

The project was developed by contractors Morgan Sindall Construction and Infrastructure Limited and when complete in the next few weeks will include a stainless-steel whale sculpture designed by award-winning British artist Lee Simmons.

Formed in tubular sections that follow the contours of the creature, the structure will flow from the northern entrance of Waterfront Place with the tail arching towards the Tay to capture a sense of movement.

Visitors to the park will also enjoy a multi-sensory experience using both sound and light with stainless steel tubular like maze structures representing kelp-like forests or water columns.

Cllr Alexander added: “What we will see here by the end of the summer when this project is complete will be tangible evidence of the further progress being made at the waterfront.

“It forms the next step forward in our phased and managed growth at the waterfront and the months and years ahead will see much more to come on the other sites across the area.”

The urban beach opens today (Thursday) and with greater access to the main landscaped area due by the end of the month and the water feature and dunes due in early September the installation of the whale sculpture and opening of the play area will complete the project by the end of next month.

Students at the University of Dundee are turning snippets of local life into art as part of a new online exhibition.

Illustration students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design have interpreted oral histories from some of Dundee’s most colourful characters into new pieces of art, including jewellery, photography, and even a set of bagpipes.

Third-year students were provided with recordings from the University’s Archive Services, with the task of producing new work based on the experiences of storytellers, including actress Louise Ann Ross, street poet Gary Robertson, and photographer Alex Coupar.

The finished pieces from this year’s Archive Project are now available to view online.

Natalie Russell, Illustration lecturer, said, “The Archive Project really challenges our students to push their creative boundaries to create something both original and yet relevant to the resources we provide them.

“Seeing what they produce is always exciting, and this year’s selection of work is once again exceptional and a testament to the skills of our students. This year has obviously been different for the students, but their dedication and talent is evident through the pieces they have created for this task.

“The Archive Project always has a focus on Dundee, and that has been particularly nice this year, as it has helped to maintain that connection between those students who have sadly been away from the city for so long.

“While we sadly cannot welcome the people of Dundee to campus to view the results of this year’s Archive Project, we do hope that people enjoy the online exhibition experience.”

The Archive Project has been running since January 2017 and has inspired a range of exciting exhibition works reflecting the contents of boxes of material stored within the University of Dundee Archives.

While students are usually presented with a mystery box of items with which to inspire them, this year the Archive Services selected recordings from ’the Oral History Project' - a new and exciting alternative that offered more flexibility. These testimonies offered insights into the lives of people who have lived and worked in Dundee and its surrounding areas.

This year’s Archive Project is available to view online now.

An ambitious plan to boost Dundee’s growing tourism sector has been unveiled.

Leading tourism experts in the city, through the Tourism Leadership Group, will oversee the Dundee Tourism Recovery Plan- Covid 19 to ensure the city is ready to progress and strengthen its tourism offer as quickly as possible as Coronavirus restrictions begin to lift.

In 2019 alone Dundee’s economy received a record breaking £214 million tourism boost and received accolades including being named among the coolest places in the world to visit this year by National Geographic Traveller UK, and featuring in Condé Nast Traveller UK’s 10 Best UK City Breaks for 2019.

This plan sets out key objectives to ensure the city maximises its reputation as a must-see destination despite the challenges posed by Covid-19.

The key priorities of this ambitious plan will see the creation of a city narrative to tell the authentic story of Dundee, considering the changing markets for tourism and new priorities for prospective visitors.

In addition, the plan seeks to anticipate and respond to seasonal demand, grow visitor numbers, and ensure environmental sustainability remains a key focus of the city’s tourism activity.

With restrictions easing, A ‘Dundee Welcomes You’ guide has been pulled together in order to help visitors enjoy their visit. The webpage details what is open including hotels, attractions and retail.

This recovery plan builds on the Dundee Tourism Strategy 2020- 2025, the publication of which has been postponed due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Going forward, the overarching aim of this plan is to return the city to a position where it is ready to adopt and implement the full tourism strategy.

Chair of the Dundee Partnership, Councillor John Alexander said: “Prior to the coronavirus outbreak Dundee’s tourism sector was booming and I hope as restrictions ease more and more people will once again come and visit Scotland’s sunniest city
“We exceeded our 2020 target for economic impact, overnight stays and day visits in 2019 to the city, this plan will build upon the innovative and creative record Dundee has and will work to attract more visitors and increase the spend in the city.

“We all have the responsibility to enjoy the city safely and I’m delighted this group will work closely with the sector to provide advice on safety measures, new initiatives and promote funding streams that are available to this sector.”
Deirdre Robertson, Chief Executive of the Dundee Heritage Trust, has been appointed the Chair of the Tourism Leadership Group and Tara Wainwright, Acting Director of Audiences & Media at V&A Dundee, and Jessica Reid, Deputy Director and Head of External Relations at Dundee Contemporary Arts, have been appointed Vice Chairs of the group.

Deirdre Robertson, newly appointed Chair of the Tourism Leadership Group, said: "It has been really encouraging in the first few days since restrictions have been eased to see how many visitors are coming from out with the city to visit Dundee's heritage and cultural venues and how responsible and respectful they are being.

“It is clear Dundee is increasingly being recognised within Scotland and beyond, not just for its much-loved visitor attractions and the range and quality of its restaurants and accommodation options, but also as a fantastic tourist base.

“There are very few cities with such richness on its doorstep, where visitors can base themselves and so easily reach an incredible variety of things to do - stunning castles and stately homes, historic abbeys, spectacular waterfalls, watersports, mountains, beautiful beaches, gorgeous river walks and picturesque, authentic unspoilt villages - all within easy travelling distance of our fabulous wee city.

“Dundonians know we are blessed to live here and increasingly others are wakening up to how amazing it is too."

This plan is designed to work in partnership with Dundee’s Cultural Recovery and Resilience Plan and with the city’s economic recovery plan.
