The Dragon is based on a local legend of the Nine Maidens. The dragon guards the east end of the High Street.

The dragon sculpture was the concept of Alistair Smart, a lecturer at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art. Unfortunately he died just before he was offered the commission after winning a limited competition. It was Alistair’s family who requested that Tony Morrow, an ex-student of Alistair’s, take over the artwork. Tony took Alistair’s concept and furthered the design into this exciting sculpture.
