Talk Event: Scotland's She Town: Women, Work and Resistance
Gender inequality in the workplace takes many forms, from unequal pay to disparity in promotions and incidents of harassment. If history has taught us anything, women are not "passive victims"; we see examples of women fighting for their rights everywhere. Join us for a look back at women in the workplace and labour movements throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and what work might look like for women in a post-COVID-19 world. Speaker 1: Erin Farley, Dundee Libraries' Local History Centre. Through the writings of a Scottish mill worker, trade unionist, and artist Mary Brooksbank, Erin explores the living and working conditions in Victorian Dundee, then referred to as "She Town". Speaker 2: Emily Robinson, Local Historian and Activist. Specialising in modern British history, from the early 19th century to the present, Emily's research focuses on feminist political history and women in the labour movement. Through the lens of the 1993 Dundee Timex Strike, Emily explores how women have contributed to the fight for better working conditions. The evening will be capped off with a performance of Victorian broadside ballads by Scottish folk artist, researcher and educator Jennifer Reid - think rousing songs and passionate oratory!
