Even in such difficult times as these, Dundee continues to shine.

In the latest in a string of accolades, the city has been named among the Best Places to Live in the UK 2020 by the world-renowned Sunday Times.

It follows the same paper naming Dundee the Best Place to Live in Scotland in 2019.

Published just before the country went into lockdown as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, the report highlights the £1bn waterfront regeneration, which is helping to breathe new life into the city.

The article also gives a nod to Dundee’s burgeoning design culture - from “the city’s famous gamers (Grand Theft Auto was created in Dundee)” to fashion’s Hayley Scanlan “who has twice won young designer of the year.”

The authors go on the say that they love how Dundee is “forging ahead and forging communities” – strengths which stand the city in good stead during and beyond the current crisis.

The Sunday Times also noted that Dundee had much to offer in the hospitality sector – great bars, restaurants and tourist attractions – before they were forced to close due to the restrictions imposed to prevent the spread of the virus.

Visitors and locals alike will look forward to enjoying this vibrant offering once again once the restrictions are lifted.

Leader of Dundee City Council, John Alexander, said: “To have been named one of the best places to live in the UK by the Sunday Times is another tremendous accolade for Dundee.

“Reading this report reminds us just how far Dundee had come before the pandemic, and the strengths we have to build on in the weeks, months and years to come.”

An award-winning young British artist has been chosen to provide the centre-piece of a key space at Dundee Waterfront.

Delivering the next phase of the project will be a fundamental part of the city’s economic recovery plan and the decision to award the contract to Lee Simmons allows detailed design and engineering work to take place.

Construction on the other elements of Waterfront Place will continue when the current restrictions are eased.

Lee Simmons has centred his design proposal on a sculpture in the form of a humpback whale that will act as a beacon within the new interactive play park at Waterfront Place.

His design and cost of £134,750 were judged to provide the best overall quality/price by a panel of experts led by Dundee City Council.

Alan Ross convener of the council’s city development committee said: “Looking at Lee’s proposal, and some of his previous work in London, shows not only what a talented and creative individual he is but also that someone with his track record wanted to be a part of the Waterfront redevelopment, demonstrates the massive buzz that it is creating across the country and beyond.

“This decision allows the more detailed design work to be undertaken so we are ready to get underway without delay, subject of course to the government advising that construction activity is safe.”

Lee said: “I am delighted to have been offered my first commission in Scotland and excited by the idea of getting started when it’s possible.

“The natural form of a huge mammal created with modern materials in such an amazing setting is perfect for me because I love to bring together architecture, art and design and explore what blurring their boundaries looks and feels like.”

The council invited proposals from potential designers to develop and deliver a unique space within Waterfront Place to bring art, technology and play together to deliver a contemporary destination.

Chosen for the city’s historical connections to whaling, a key element of the play space is an original “sculptural structure” in the form of a whale, and seven innovative and ambitious entries to the design competition were judged on quality and cost.

As part of the selection process, a shortlist of four were invited to present to a panel chaired by Dundee City Council and including representatives of V&A Dundee, Abertay University, St Andrews University and Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design.

The humpback whale design will be the centrepiece of the space created in a size and scale that complements its surroundings, while accommodating both convincing aesthetic values and visual strength.

Formed in tubular sections that follow the contours of the creature, the structure will flow from the northern entrance of Waterfront Place with the tail arching towards the Tay to capture a sense of movement.

Visitors to the park will also enjoy a multi-sensory experience using both sound and light and exploring the use of an interactive canvas beneath the whale that can respond to users’ three dimensional movements.

In line with the council’s procedures during the pandemic the contract was approved by the chief executive and executive director of city development in consultation with the committee’s convener, Labour Group Spokesperson, Conservative Group Spokesperson, Liberal Democrat Group Spokesperson, the Independent Member and the Lord Provost.

It will be published under the scheme of delegated powers and reported to the city development committee for information once the council returns to its normal business.

The council and its partners will work closely with the appointed design team to fully develop all workings drawings and design information required for tender purposes and a further tender report will be brought back to the city development committee to approve construction costs for the finalised design.

Hundreds of final-year students will be exhibiting the fruits of their creative labours online when one of the University of Dundee’s flagship events goes fully digital for the first time.

The Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Showcase 2020 is an online display taking place in the absence of the annual Degree Show, which has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Graduate Showcase celebrates achievements of graduating students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design and the department of Architecture within the School of Social Sciences. The launch of this event will be broadcast live online on Friday 12 June to students, staff, families, friends and other visitors. The Showcase will be accompanied by a social media campaign that will run until 21 June.

The Degree Show is a highlight of the city’s cultural calendar and attracts in excess of 10,000 visitors each year, including employers, gallery owners and other leading industry figures. It is hoped that a physical exhibition of work from this year’s graduating students can be arranged in the future and the Showcase aims to provide them with the best possible platform for their talents in the meantime.

The work on display will represent the culmination of years of creative development and hard work, with the website featuring expanded information on all students, including extra images and video content.

Professor Anita Taylor, Dean of Duncan of Jordanstone, said, “We remain deeply disappointed about the cancellation of our Degree Show this year, a disappointment shared at institutions across the UK who have had to take the same action. Nonetheless we are committed to creating the opportunity for graduating Architecture and DJCAD students to come together as a community.

“Each year we are inspired by the outstanding quality of work produced by our graduating students, and this year is no exception. The work these students are continuing to produce in extraordinary circumstances is exceptional and I know the viewers from around the world will enjoy the outcomes of these endeavours and the immense range of work and talent on display.

“Our Showcase and accompanying social media campaign will allow us to share the achievements, stories, and work of our graduating cohort with public and professional communities, friends and families.

“The University is proud of our longstanding reputation for educating the next generation of artists, designers and architects. Our graduates are to be found across the globe, establishing careers forged from their formative experiences of being a student here in Dundee.”

The Art, Design and Architecture Graduate Showcase 2020 will be available to view online from 12 June at www.dundee.ac.uk/graduateshowcase.

The University of Dundee has been placed in the top 50 in the world in the 2020 edition of the Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings.

The rankings recognise that the role of universities extends beyond research and teaching to a third mission revolving around engagement, knowledge exchange and innovation for societal good. These rankings measure the global higher education sector’s success in delivering the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The rankings include more than 800 universities worldwide. Dundee is ranked 44th overall and 9th in the world against the Sustainable Development Goal of Good Health & Wellbeing.

On the latter, Times Higher Education said universities need to demonstrate actions to improve local and global health and well-being, and measured performance across a range of factors from publication and impact of research to outreach into local communities and provision of services for staff and students.

Dundee was also ranked inside the top 50 against the SDGs of Climate Action, Responsible Consumption and Production, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Partnership for the Goals.

Professor David Maguire, Interim Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, “These results show the outstanding impact of Dundee’s work and the success in meeting our aim of transforming lives locally and globally.

“This high level of impact is remarkable and testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff and students over many years.

“This is an extraordinary university, doing world-changing research, providing students with an experience that is consistently rated among the very best, and making a real difference to people’s lives.”

Times Higher Education say that inclusion in the University Impact Rankings marks out institutions as global pioneers that can demonstrate commitment not just to supporting SDGs through teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities, but also to embodying the goals in internal practices and policies.

We feel it's important during this difficult time to celebrate those who are working even harder than ever to help the community.  Here you will find dedicated Dundee businesses, updated over the coming weeks, that we love to celebrate and say a small thank you to.  If you are or know anyone who is working for the betterment of our city at this time please get in touch to champion you or them as a #DundeeHero

Les Turriff

Three weeks ago, when restaurants and bars were closed, Les Turriff faced decimation of its business. When they realised they could help the community with the plentiful fresh produce at their disposal, they jumped into action. Knowing they had no supply chain issues as well as staff and vehicles, Les Turriff became front line workers for those who needed them in the crisis.

They have been in the process of setting up and online platform to cater to customers which made the conversion to a home delivery site very quick and easy.

They have been amazed by the support from the public, which has allowed their business to retain staff while being a service to the community in isolation.

They practice a safe distance delivery service, leaving the produce at the front door unless specified otherwise. This keeps their staff and customers safe at the same time.

They have also set up a discount for NHS staff who order from an NHS email address. This act is generous and shows their support for heroes too.

They have been receiving fantastic feedback and hope to keep the service running once the world is back to normal.

Les Turriff is a local business showing tremendous generosity and community spirit. Is your business or any business you know operating as a local hero? If so let us know so we can champion them as a #DundeeHero

Cate Mackie

In her everyday life, Cate Mackie is Head of Wardrobe at Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre. She was contacted by NHS Scotland and asked to take on the role of coordinator for For the Love of Scrubs in Dundee. They needed coordinators as there was such a massive response (1200 offers within the first 24 hours!)

Cate realised it made more sense to cover all of NHS Tayside when a request came in for 1000 sets of scrubs in each size or as many as they could manage with the donations they had received through the Go Fund Me page, set up by the Love of Scrubs girls.

https://www.gofundme.com/f/nr2zv-nhs-scotland-for-the-love-of-scrubs

Cate's day-to-day is now hectic. She has a list of volunteers and has had to call in the help of theatre costume makers, most of whom are freelancers and therefore out of work at the moment. She has had a lot to organise in such a short space of time. However, as of this week, they are producing more scrubs than ever, working tirelessly to help the frontline workers in the NHS. They must ensure they use the correct fabric; otherwise, the hospitals can't accept them due to infection control guidelines and they are keeping safe and socially distanced when they arrange the drop-off and pickups.

Cate said "It's a massive operation just for Tayside – and the exact same system is in place in every area of Scotland. The idea is that people don't keep contacting hospitals or GP surgeries and offering to help. This way, there is one point of contact, and the hospitals don't get inundated with calls. Hospitals and GPs can request scrubs through the website, so we know where the help is needed most."

This is a major role Cate has taken on and should be as proud of herself as we are. She is a true #DundeeHero.

Biju Yohannan

Biju Yohannan works in Victoria Food and Booze. Since before the pandemic, he has worked 8am-10am everyday, mid-week and 10am-10pm every Saturday and Sunday. Besides never taking a day off, he has started to volunteer helping regular, elderly customers. People who frequently come to visit him he has advised to stay home for their own safety and now takes their orders over the phone, closes the shop for as long as the journey takes and delivers their items with as much PPE he has at the given time.

At the moment, he does this for around five customers, but that could grow. He said the hardest part is to get items from his suppliers and finds he runs out of things often now. Unfortunately, he notices a lot of people not complying with government guidelines, although this number is becoming smaller. He said people are starting to realise the brevity of the situation and he appreciates their cognisance of this, especially for those that are living in a lot of fear.

All in all, he notices kindness, now more so than ever and wishes to see that continue.

Biju is a valued member of our local community who works tirelessly, always going the extra mile. He and all other heroes like him should be celebrated.

Luigi's Pizzeria

"CHOOSE PIZZA, NOT PANIC" says one of Dundee's favourite pizzeria's, Luigi's Pizzeria

Their pizza recipes that date back through three generations are still out for delivery during this trying time. They say that not just pizza, but positivity is what they are trying to promote to their customers now more so than ever. Working behind closed doors, offering home delivery to the fine city of Dundee, available on the app of over the phone, Luigi's are lifting the spirits of those isolating at home. They ensure a contactless delivery keeping both the drivers and customers safe.

Their opening hours remain the same with the new addition of Daytime Part Baked Deliveries to the surrounding areas of Dundee.

Luigi's part-baked pizzas can be cooked at home or even frozen for a later date. Full details on delivery days and how to order can be found on the website in the "Luigi's Lockdown" section. They are still looking to add new delights to their menu, so keep an eye out for those!

Thankful for the love and support they have been receiving, they hope to continue working hard to bring pizza and positivity to everyone. Owner Dominique has said "Thank You. Thank You to everyone for supporting our small family run business, we are truly grateful."

Andrew McKenzie

Andrew Mckenzie of Verdant Spirits sprung into action at the beginning of the outbreak. With the rapid sellout of hand sanitiser, Andrew and team began making large batches of sanitiser to be used by primarily the NHS but are now distributing to local charities, non-profits and health partnerships.

Their GoFundMe page can be found here gofundme.com/f/8hpbh-help-us-make-hand-sanitiser-for-our-health-workers?utm_medium=copy_link&utm_source=customer&utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet+exp4va

And with HMRC waiving duty on any further batches, you know your support is going exactly where it needs to be!

They have made huge batches of active hand sanitiser but are now on the lookout for smaller bottles. They need a  large shipment of 100/200ml bottles that would be suitable for personal use. They would preferably have pump or spray attachments for easy administration. Do you know of a local business that could help?

Tayview Hotel

Tayview Hotel has been helping during this crisis by offering hot meals to the frontline NHS staff. In particular to those working in COVID 19 wards, A&E and ICU in Ninewells Hospital. They started with Ward 42 that primarily deals with COVID 19 patients. They now handle eight wards in addition to two other hospitals, Kings Cross and Royal Victoria Hospital in Dundee.

Tayview Hotel tries to supply 50 to 60 cooked meals every day. They say that "those hot meals are really appreciated by the doctors and nurses who are working long shifts."

They have a crowdfunding page to maintain the level of work they do and appreciate all the donations they can get to continue giving to the NHShttps://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/mohammed-misbahuddin

You can also follow all the work they are doing on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/tayviewhotel/posts/2925165577572329

Tayview Hotel is another example of how businesses in Dundee are helping in this time of crisis. If you are or know of another business who should be celebrated along with other #DundeeHeroes please get in touch!

Gillian McGovern (D&A College)

Gillian McGovern and team at Dundee and Angus College have successfully managed to cut and assemble 500 visors to help protect the NHS. They have used their facilities to help frontline workers most in need.

Distribution has been carried out to Ninewells and Victoria Hospital in Dundee. Gillian mentioned, "They were extremely grateful and were in desperate need."

The team is now set up and a COVID-19 hub for Angus, Dundee, Tayside and Perth. They plan to continue working for as long as they can procure the appropriate materials.

The work Gillian and team are carrying out is an invaluable contribution to key workers. They are part of keeping everyone safe during this difficult time.

Fraser's Fruit and Veg

Fraser's Fruit and Veg on the Perth road have been helping during the COVID-19 outbreak by only charging £1 delivery. By doing this they ensure everyone is eating well and saving some money during this tough time.

More importantly, this £1 from every delivery is going to foodbanks in the local area. In the week ending Friday 3rd April, they made and delivered 250 boxes of fruit and veg! This massive achievement for a small local business meant they had over £400 raised for local foodbanks via orders!

If you would like to enquire about veg boxes, please email frasersdelivery@gmail.com

Fraser's Fruit and Veg is a great example of how generosity of spirit has a huge impact on the surrounding community. By using this their service, you support local charity, helping those most in need.

Blend Coffee Lounge

Blend Coffee Lounge, Dundee has launched a 'Thank you' initiative for those on the frontline. You can now buy a bag of speciality coffee and donate it to someone you know who works in the NHS or is a key worker!

They deliver within Dundee for free and outwith for an extra charge. All you have to do is contact them via Facebook with the name, address and a personalised message.

If you don't know anyone personally but would like to donate a bag of speciality coffee, they will have one delivered to the staff of Ninewells hospital.

By supporting this local business, you are supporting our wonderful key workers. In times like these, they could really use the boost!

Neil Campbell

A University of Dundee student has organised a community-based response to coronavirus in one of the city’s most deprived areas.

As well as studying for an MSc Community Learning and Development degree at the University, Neil Campbell is also the founder and Director of RockSolid Dundee, a faith-based social action initiative in the East End of the city.

When the COVID-19 crisis started impacting those most vulnerable in the East End area, Neil, supported by RockSolid development manager Audrey Thomson and their team initially set up a food larder at Douglas & Mid Craigie Church of Scotland, serving around 20 households. With the help of other city organisations, this very quickly turned into a much bigger effort.

RockSolid now distributes around 200 lunches per day to local people and families, with the larder serving nearly 100 households. The group also delivers food parcels to those isolated, vulnerable, or unable to leave their home, continuing to support those most in need in the local area.

“We have been overwhelmed by the support of the local community,” said Neil.

Rock Solid

Meet the team behind RockSolid that could not run without the fantastic, dedicated volunteers, staff and support from the community as well as partners from across Dundee.

This service is free of charge. One bag per household is available, which one person from that household can collect. They ask the public to please follow physical distancing guidelines and to "Stay safe. Keep Well. Take Care"

Dundee’s nightlife is a huge part of why it’s been named Britain’s Coolest Little City. From prohibition-style Speakeasies to chic, Italian-inspired aperitivo lounges, there’s something for everyone. You just have to know where to look… There are late-night bars in Dundee which you know will be good before a drink is even poured. You only have to look behind the counter, and see the trophies and awards vying for space with the liquor bottles. A long-standing favourite hangout for cocktail lovers is the Jute café bar at the DCA. In its 20th year, it still pours top classic cocktails despite its busy, bustling atmosphere. Mojitos, Margaritas and Martinis adorn the menu, but it’s not just the breadth of offering that should entice you - the multi-levelled outdoor terrace is the perfect summer suntrap to cool down with a cocktail.

If it’s more of a late-night, intimate scene you’re looking for, there’s the King of Islington on Union Street. Think trendy rum vibes in a tiny single room. The head bartender is globally renowned, and it shows. All staff can whip up fantastic rum cocktails from the menu or anything else that suits your tastes. Transport yourself to Latin America with more rum than you could shake a sugarcane at!

Whilst there, it might be worth asking your bartender where their sister venue, Draffens, is. It’s Dundee’s speakeasy, named after the 19th Century department store in which it now resides. No signage, no branding, no social media. It’s a true trip back in time to the prohibition era. Bar staff serve in the style of the period and serve up stiff cocktails under jazz and dim gas-lights. If you can manage the stairs, you’ll make it to The Blue Room. It’s an atmospheric Italian apertivo experience, with plush seating and azure design Drinks are served in elegant glassware - you’ll feel instantly Italian and imminently Instagrammable.

Leaving the Nethergate and heading up the Perth Road will bring you to another subterranean cocktail joint: Capone’s. You guessed it, named after Al Capone and designed as another speakeasy; guests can have a peek at his “jail cell” built into the décor. Not to mention ordering some great nibbles to go along with cocktails while listening to the swing and jazz that he would have approved of.

If you’ve had your fill of the 1920s and beyond, why not step over to Dundee’s buzzing cultural quarter for something a little more contemporary? On the corner of the Westport, you’ll find the West House. Their relaxed café vibe continues into the night with sweet, eager-to-please cocktails. It’s the bubble-gum Fizz that will have your Instagram and tongue popping. DJs playing disco-house at the weekends are the perfect way to enjoy the sweet fizzy sensations on offer.

A little less sweet, and a little more Spanish, on the street is the city centre’s little slice of the Iberian Peninsula. In its infancy, Gallery 48 specialised in gin and wine along with tapas, but now offers an extensive cocktail range curated by award-winning bartenders. Speak nicely to those bartenders, and you may get a unique cocktail tailored to your unique tastes. A little flavour of sunshine is sometimes exactly what you need.

Another hidden bar worth discovering is just a three-minute walk from Gallery 48. 3 Session Street, name and address, is in a renovated jute mill. The ample open space is kept cosy with gas lamps on each table and plush seating areas. Their cocktails aren’t just for enjoying either. You can book a master class with friends and have a shake yourself! They also host Bottomless Brunches, usually once a month so get in touch and reserve a seat!

All of the bars above have won awards in the drinks and hospitality world. Considering that the second oldest venue on the list is only four years old, Dundee has certainly put itself on the cocktail map the world over. So why not book your next cocktail trail to Dundee? Everything is in walking distance and, with so many fabulous places to stay in the city, you can relax and sip at your leisure!

Last night, The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum  struck gold at the 2019/20 Scottish Thistle Awards National Final at Edinburgh International Conference Centre where they won Best Visitor Attraction.

The Scottish Thistle Awards, now in their 27th year, help shine the spotlight on individuals and businesses going above and beyond to create a destination and visitor experience worth talking about amongst our valuable tourism industry. They champion the very best of the Scottish tourism industry, celebrating innovation, success and excellence in the sector.

2019 saw almost 600 entries submitted, including more than 1,000 nominations from members of the public keen to give hotels, restaurants, B&Bs, visitor attractions and individuals the opportunity to earn the recognition they deserve from their own industry peers.

The McManus: Dundee’s Art Gallery & Museum is a Victorian Gothic building, home to Dundee's museum collection spanning 400 million years and has been at the heart of art and culture in the City since 1867. “Character with a modern twist” is how this wonderful Guest House is described and by looking at the photographs that seems to be right on the money! Another Broughty Ferry gem, it is “beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean” –even though they welcome our furry friends! Which is perfect as the seaside village has a beach and riverside walkway that dogs (and owners alike) love!

The best way to really get to know a city is to live it like a local. Our insider’s guide takes you off the beaten track and into the best hidden spots to Discover Dundee. One of the great things about Dundee is that it’s a really compact city. You don’t have to wander far from the centre to discover hidden gems well worth whiling away a few hours in. The Museum of Transport is one of them. Less than a mile from the city centre at Market Mews, its unassuming façade hides a fantastic attraction telling the stories of local transport pioneers and innovators as well as displaying vehicles from local and national collections. It’s a great day out for little and big ones alike.

Continuing east, a walking and cycle path leads to picturesque Broughty Ferry. A former fishing village, it retains an easygoing appeal just a few miles from the busy heart of the city. The large beach facing out into the Tay estuary is stunning and is dominated by Broughty Castle, an old fort that functions as a museum and viewpoint. While there, ideally enjoying the weather which makes Dundee Scotland’s sunniest city, an ice cream at Visocchi’s is a must. You can’t miss it – on summer days there will be locals and visitors queued down the street.

Heading the short distance back into town, it’s easy to miss the charming waterfront area at City Quay. What was once a working dock area has been beautifully converted into a parade of shops, eateries and business premises. Don’t miss a wander down beautiful Chandlers Lane to the water – very Instagrammable! Nearby is the Frigate Unicorn. At nearly 200 years old, HMS Unicorn is one of the world’s most remarkable historic ships and preserved as a museum and visitor attraction in Dundee with four atmospheric decks for visitors to explore. This reminder of the golden age of sail now shares the water with energetic wakeboarders – try it out for yourself at Foxlake if you’re feeling energetic.

Having worked up a hunger – and a thirst – it’s the West End you want to be heading for. While there are great bars and restaurants all over Dundee, some of the best hidden gems live on the lively stretch west from the cultural quarter at DCA. With its hard-to-spot entrance, visitors could be forgiven for walking right by Taypark House. A former baronial mansion house, with impeccable landscaped grounds, it now offers a delicious menu and has a cosy gin lounge, where tasting days are often hosted.

If beer’s more your thing, you don’t want to miss 71 Brewing. Reviving the historic Dundee brewing trade, it produces traditional IPAs and Pilsners as well as more experimental beers finished with extracts from apricot and blueberry to coffee. Tours of the brewery are offered and include a chance to taste its products.

Of course, a good drink deserves good company. And there’s always plenty of that in the West End institutions that is the Speedwell Bar. Known confusingly to locals as Mennie’s (after a long-gone landlady), this old-style pub is full of Edwardian wooden fixtures and fittings, split up into cosy nooks with open fires. With a bit of luck some talented local fiddlers will launch into an impromptu gig while you’re in. To end the night, there’s only one place to go. Not far from Mennie’s is Clark’s Bakery, which is open 24-hours and one of the best places in the city to enjoy to famous Dundee ‘peh.’ Dundonians love a peh, or pie, and will put anything in them, from the staple steak and gravy to curry and even Bolognese. Why not try out a bit of Dundee dialect while you’re ordering too – “eh’ll heh a peh!”

V&A Dundee has welcomed its 1 millionth visitor today (Tuesday 4 February), just over 500 days after it first opened.

Seven-year-old Nalani Becker from Berlin arrived at the museum at 11.04am with her father Jan, while her mother was working at the University of Dundee.

The family are visiting friends in Dundee and technology enthusiast Nalani was excited to see the latest exhibition Hello, Robot. Design Between Human and Machine which closes this Sunday and will not be shown anywhere else in the UK.

Nalani and Jan were surprised with a gift bag including Hello, Robot exhibition tickets, afternoon tea in Tatha Bar and Kitchen, and a voucher for £100 to spend in the museum shop.

The museum opened in September 2018 and welcomed over 830,000 visitors in its first year, far exceeding the estimate of 500,000.

V&A Dundee also had a £75 million economic impact across Scotland in its first year after opening, according to recent independent research conducted by Ekosgen and Reference Economic Consultants.

Philip Long, Director of V&A Dundee, said: “I am thrilled that today we have welcomed our 1 millionth visitor, just over 500 days after opening the doors of Scotland’s first design museum.

“We have a hugely exciting year ahead, with the last chance to see our UK-exclusive exhibition Hello, Robot this weekend and our first major fashion exhibition Mary Quant opening in April. I would like to thank everyone who has helped to create V&A Dundee, and who continues to support its incredible success.”

Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop said: “I’d like to congratulate V&A Dundee for welcoming its 1 millionth visitor, an impressive achievement and a sign of the museum’s strong appeal to visitors from around the world.

“The museum, built with the help of £38 million in Scottish Government funding, has already more than proved its cultural value, far exceeding expectations for visitor numbers and improving Scotland’s status as a prime destination for world-class cultural experiences.”

UK Arts Minister Helen Whately said: "In a short space of time V&A Dundee has had a huge impact: bringing millions to the Scottish economy, championing Scottish design and now celebrating its millionth visitor.

"The museum has become a tourist magnet, delivering huge benefits to Dundee and the surrounding area, and the UK Government is very proud to be one of its early backers."

Dundee City Council leader John Alexander said: "This is another tremendous achievement for V&A Dundee and the city.

“Our stunning museum is now very firmly part of the cultural fabric of Dundee, with its design galleries and exhibition programme attracting locals and visitors alike.

“It has raised Dundee’s international profile and played a key part in securing record-breaking tourism figures. V&A Dundee is helping to create jobs and new economic opportunities for the city.”

Caroline Clark, Director Scotland of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “When we took the decision to support V&A Dundee, we recognised the need for a world-class destination in Scotland to showcase the creativity, innovations and inventions that, over time, have changed lives across the world.

“We are delighted that it has reached this incredible milestone so soon. It is a real testimony to the thirst people have for exploring and celebrating their design heritage and a fitting reward for all who have contributed to the project’s success.”

V&A Dundee is currently showing Hello, Robot. Design Between Human and Machine until 9 February 2020, which challenges our assumptions about robots and investigates how they are shaping the world we live in. The exhibition has never been shown in the UK before.

Hello, Robot has been reviewed as a “groundbreaking exhibition” by The Guardian and “an unprecedented exploration” by The Daily Telegraph, and been included as a critic’s choice by The Herald and The Times.

This will be followed by V&A Dundee’s first major fashion exhibition, Mary Quant, from 4 April 2020 and Night Fever: Designing Club Culture from 31 October 2020, another UK-first exhibition.

V&A Dundee was developed with support from the Scottish Government, The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Dundee City Council, the UK Government, Creative Scotland, Scottish Enterprise, University of Dundee, Abertay University and many trusts, companies and private donors.

The museum was officially opened by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in January 2019.
